Vedanthangal is about 55 kms from the city. It is a 30-hectare national sanctuary here which is visited every year by thousands of migratory birds. Cholamandal is  only 35 kms and an  artists' cooperative which has sprung up 20 km south of Chennai on the way to Mamallapuram. The  Crocodile Bank (14 kms) is a  sanctuary  where severed species of Indian and African crocodiles and alligators can be found The  Muttukadu Boat House (21 kms)is ideal for  acidities for boating and wind-surfing.

Dakshina Chithra (25 kms)is adjacent to MGM which is the Dakshina Chithra complex  run by the Madras Craft Foundation, Chengalpath (30kms), Vandalur Zoo (55 kms) are also well known.

Mamaiiapuram Tourism - An ancient seaport, on the shores of Bay of Bengal, built by the Pallava king Narasimhavarman I, in the 7th century AD, Maamallapuram is a treasure trove of South Indian sculptural and architectural heritage.

Kancheepuram has an impressive list of 'appeals' for all. It is one of the seven holy cities in the country, with architecturally fascinating temples.

The Pallavas have created many marvelous monuments with Sculptural Panels, Caves, Monolithic Rathas and Temples. It is a town in Kancheepuram district with a number of historic monuments built between 7 th and 9 th centuries and classified as UNESCO world heritage sites.

Tours to Mamaallapuram - There are several tourist attractions in Mamallapuram. The Arjuna's Penance is a skillfully carved rock and the largest relief sculpture in the world.

It gets its name from the figure of an ascetic who is believed to be Arjuna, the hero of Mahabharata, doing penance to obtain a boon from Lord Siva.

However, there are others who think that the figure is actually Bhagiratha who entreated Siva to let the river Ganges flow over the earth. Five Rathas are five monolithic temples, each created in different style.

Mamallapuram Tourism and they are also known as Pancha Pandava Rathas , and four of the Rathas are supposed to have scooped out of a single rock formation.

Tiger's Cave is located 4 kms north of the main monument complex. It is an open air theatre, where cultural programs are held. Though it is very near the sea, the place is serene and calm.

The Shore Temple is one of the oldest temples in South India. It belongs to the 8th Century AD and is a good example of the first phase of structural temples constructed in Dravidian style.

Mahabalipuram or Mamallapuram as it is also known is famous for its hot summers and mild winters.

The summer temperature is known to rise to as high as 35°C and a minimum of 19°C. Thus, the best time to visit Mahabalipuram or Mamallapuram is during the months of October to march when the weather remains enticingly pleasant.

Once, one of the busiest ports of the Pallava dynasty, the beautiful city of Mahabalipuram or Mamallapuram has puzzled countless social historians on the puzzle of its origin.

Though a number of architectural remain allow experts to contemplate on the origin of this beautiful city, yet the mystery surrounding the birth of the city of Mahabalipuram or Mamallapuram grows with time.

Chennai is the closest airport from Mamallapuram. The nearest railway station is Chengalpattu. There are bus services to Mamallapuram from Chennai and Chengalpattu.
