About 30 kms from Chidambaram is Neyveli which houses one of India’s largest industrial complexes. It is also known as one of the chief sources of lignite, a form of impure coal which is widely used as fuel.

Around 50 kms from Chidambaram is the place when the great emperor of the Chola dynasty etched poetry in stone, Gangaikonda Cholapuram. The temple inspires awe not only because of its size but also because of the intricately carved images on the temple. This area is also ideal for trekking; there are hills all around the city with botanical gardens and two waterfalls.
