Kollam lies north of Trivandrum at a distance of 71 km.
It is a beautiful place and if you have spare time, a place certainly worth a visit.
You can get some very good cashew nuts there.
Kollam also has the oldest port of India and was once the hub of trade and commerce in India.
Alappuzha is another popular city near Trivadnrum, replete with temples and backwaters.
It is one of those cities where most of the tourists ensure visiting.
It is connected to Trivandrum via train and road. Kovalam is a little south of Trivandrum.
Trivandrum - Climate
Because of its nearness to the sea, the climate of Trivandrum is tropical. This also gives Trivandrum a very pleasant weather round the year.
The average maximum temperature can go up to 36.2°C in summer months and to a minimum of 18.0°C in the winters. Monsoon comes to Trivandrum in the month of May and remains there until November.
Trivandrum- History
The city, according to the legends, boasts of being associated with King Solomon whose ships landed at a port called Ophir.
Traders have been coming to these parts as far back as 190 AD for spices, sandalwood, and ivory.
The city derives its name from the deity at the Sree Anantha Padmanabhaswami Temple, one of the major landmarks of the place.
The name of the city is derived from the words Thiru-Anantha-Puram, meaning the town of Anantha. Although no records of the antiquity of the temple really exists, the temple nevertheless is believed to be several thousands years old.
Thiruvananthapuram shot into prominence in the 18th century when the capital was shifted here form Padmanabhapuram, a little down south.
The erstwhile kings of the then Travancore State, taking on the title of Padmanabhadas (servant of Lord), had dedicated themselves completely to the service of the Lord residing in the temple here.
By the terms of this dedication, the deity owns the kingdom while the king is the mere executor of the trust.
After independence, the city was designated as the capital of Kerala.
Best seasons and Climate
Trivandrum has tropical climate and has very pleasant weather through out the year.
The average temperature can go up to 36.2 degree centigrade in summer and minimum temperature does not go below 18 degree centigrade. May to November is Monsoon time.
Shree Padhmanabhaswamy temple
Shree Padhmanabhaswamy temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu is held sacred by the Hindus from antiquity. The temple has a large complex with a huge gopuram. It has a tank beside it for ritual bathing
Kovalam
Kovalam is 12kms to the south of Thiruvananthapuram and is one of the finest beaches in India. It has been developed into an integrated seaside resort. The beach complex has many hotels, cottages, yoga centres etc.
Vizhinjam About 2kms south of Kovalam, it is believed to be an ancient port. The Dutch and Portugese had commercial establishments here. It is being developed as a modern fishing harbour.
Ponmudi A pleasant resort at an elevation of 912m above sea level. It is 61 kms from Thiruvananthapuram and connected by road. There are many tree and rubber estates around the hills.
