Madurai

Spread over an area of approximately around 22 square kms, Madurai is the second largest city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu after the capital, Chennai. The population of the city according to the 1991 census was around 10.9 lakhs. As it is with most south Indian tourist places, Madurai is in season for almost throughout the year. The weather is generally warm with heavy rains in the monsoon (rainy) season. English and Tamil are the most widely spoken languages in the city but most people understand basic Hindi. Apart from the famous temples and palaces, Madurai is also known for the textiles in cotton.
