Bird Sanctuary is certainly the place that hits your mind first when you talk of Kumarakom. It is located on the banks of Vembanad Lake. Spread on an area of about 14 acres, you can see here many varieties of birds like siberian stork, egret, darter, heron and teal. You can also watch here many migratory birds, many of who fly all the way from the Himalayas and even from Siberia. One occasion that attracts many people are the boat races. The boat race is the major attraction indeed. These races are held on backwaters on wooden carved indigenous boats. These happen mostly around the festive season of Onam.
