Madurai

The city of Madurai is primarily known for the Meenakshi Temple, which is a perfect synthesis of the architectural styles of the Vijaynagara and the Nayaka Dynasties. The temple is located in the centre of the city and the citizens often wake up to sounds of the canting of the priests.

Annamalai and Naganmalai are two rock formations which are sacred both to the Hindus and the Jains. These re quite inaccessible and also house Tamil Brahmi inscriptions.

Located close to the Meenakshi temple is the Thirumalai Nayak Mahal, the example of classical Nayaka style of architecture. The most striking feature of this building is the dome which rises to a height of 20 meters without any support.
