The Mangala Devi Temple of Mangalore is the main deity and a must visit tourist site of the city. This is the temple after which the holy name of the city has been named. It was built as the remembrance of a Princess of Malabar by the family of Ballal in 10th century. The olden Lighthouse Hill constructed by Haider Ali in the 18th century provides a good view of the sea activities. The garden of this hill is also a good tourist interest. The city has a watchtower once built by Tipu Sultan with black stones. This tower is known as Sultan Battery. Cannons and artilleries set around gives a concept of fortress towards it.
