Brihadeeshwara Temple is a perfect example of Dravidian Temple Art. This temple is devoted to Lord Shiva. It was built during the Chola period, thus bears a marked influence from typical Chola architecture. It has a 90 feet high Gopuram and is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Vijaynagar Fort is another famous historical site in Tanjore. It was built by the Maratha king Serofji II. It has an armory, a Bell Tower and a library known as Saraswathi Mahal that has over 30,000 Indian and European manuscripts. Most of these manuscripts are written in palm leaves and parchment paper.
