Tanjore

There are many tourist attractions in and around tanjore. One of the greatest kings of the Chola dynasty, Rajaraja Chola built the Bragatheeswarar (Pruvudaiyar) Temple which is also called the Big Temple. It fills a large portion of the Shivaganga Fort and is encircled by a moat on the eastern and western sides, the Grand Anaicut Channel on the south and the Shivaganga Gardens in the north.

A breathtaking collection of south Indian paintings and sculptures can be seen in the Royal Museum in Tanjore. It is open from 9 am to 6 pm on all days except government holidays.

Built partly by the Nayakas around 1550 AD and partly by the Marathas, the Royal Palace is a major tourist attraction in the city.
