Karaikudi is the largest city in the Sivaganga district in the state of Karnataka. It is also called the “Capital of Chettinad”. Karaikudi and 74 other villages combine to form the region popularly known as Chettinad. Chettinad is the home of the Nattukottai Chettiars, a prosperous banking community, who ventured overseas to south and south East Asia to do business in the 19th and the early 20th century. It is commonly said that the city got its name after the “karai” plant that grows in abundance in this part of the country. It is the home of the famous Alagappa University.
