According to some historians and scholars, Madurai is around 2,500 years old. Situated on the banks of the Vaigai River, it is definitely the oldest city in the state of Tamil Nadu. Madurai was an important cultural and commercial hub of the region as early as 550 AD. Also called “the city of temples” Madurai was the capital city of the great Pandyan kings. A very interesting myth surrounds the origins of the name of the city. It is said to have been named after the nectar (madhuram) that flowed out of Shiva’s hair when he was blessing the foundations of the new city.
