Rameshwaram is an important Indian town. Situated at the tip of the peninsula it marks the point where Lord Rama built a bridge to Sri Lanka. This was the point from where the destruction of Ravan began. It enjoys a place of pride in Ramayana and is a pilgrim for the Hindus. It is also considered a cleansing place as Lord Rama washed away his sins after killing Ravan here. It is known as the Varanasi of the south Both the Vaishnavites and the Shaivites worship here.
